Essential Understandings on July 20th

Developing a deep understanding of multiplication, division, and fractions is a major work of mathematics teachers in grades 3, 4, and 5. This workshop is a deep dive into these three topics examining their progression across grade, unpacking the conceptual understanding within them, identifying quality tasks for teaching them well, assessing them, and determining predominant student misconceptions and why they exist. An extensive collection of classroom-ready, high-quality instructional resources will be shared.

This session is intended for any mathematics teachers, interventionists, special education teachers, coaches, and curriculum specialists who teach these concepts. This likely includes grades 3-5 teachers and 3-7 interventionists.

Number Sense, Fluency & Estimation on July 21st

Do your students struggle with reasoning about numbers and quantity, operations, decomposition, and estimation? Are you looking to develop their number sense and fluency with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals? Are you looking for practical, high-quality tasks to engage students and ignite discussion? In this session, participants learn about dynamic, doable activities that engage students in meaningful ways. A collection of ready-for-use resources will be provided and explored so that pursuit of fluency and number sense becomes a daily routine. These resources naturally complement each and every lesson in any middle school mathematics class. Classroom clips of colleagues leveraging these strategies will also be shared. This session is perfect for any mathematics teacher in grades 3 to 8 including interventionists and more.

This session is intended for any 3-8 mathematics teacher, interventionist, special education teacher, coach, and curriculum specialist looking for improved fluency and number sense in their students.

John SanGiovanni is a best-selling author and nationally recognized leader in mathematics education. He works as a mathematics coordinator in Howard County, Maryland leading curriculum development, digital mathematics education, assessment, and professional learning. As an adjunct professor at McDaniel College, John is focused on developing mathematics specialists and teacher leaders. He also works as a national consultant providing professional learning for content, pedagogy, and curriculum design. John is a frequent speaker at state and national conferences. He is active in professional organizations serving on the Board of Directors for both the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics.
