Westminster Field Trip

Competency-Based Learning in Action

Field Trip & Guest Expert Session | Virtual & Seated | Paid

The Westminster Field Trip package includes a virtual pre-visit and a follow-up face-to-face learning session in Denver, Colorado with national student learning expert Dr. Robert Marzano. Also included is a site visit to a nearby nationally renowned school district.

After arriving in Denver, attendees will be welcomed with dinner, spend the next day on a guided tour of Westminster Public Schools, a district Dr. Marzano has worked with directly for several years to create a model for implementing competency-based learning. Finally, the group will enjoy a day of learning with Dr. Marzano before heading back to Missouri.

Participants will:

  • Build background knowledge about personalized competency-based education, especially as used by Marzano Academies and Westminster Public Schools.

  • Gain familiarity with the Marzano Academies models of CBE leadership and instruction, using recently published texts by Dr. Marzano and practicing CBE educators.

  • Engage in strategic planning and identify next steps in their own journey toward personalized competency-based education.

This experience is designed to help educators better understand what competency-based learning means and how it looks in a district where this type of system is effectively utilized. Like most educational practices, it is more meaningful to practitioners when they can see the work in action.

This field trip is also designed to build GOCSD members’ foundational understanding of the work happening within the Success-Ready Students Network (SRSN). Many GOCSD districts are great candidates for engaging in the upcoming SRSN Innovation Zones' opportunities. Both DESE and legislators have indicated strong support for this learning system approach; GOCSD wants to ensure our districts have the information and understanding to engage in this very effective practice that puts student learning at the forefront of practice and assessment.

Marzano Resources is offering this unique opportunity just for GOCSD members. But, slots we do not utilize will go to other districts in the nation. The maximum number of attendees per visit is 30 with a minimum of 20. We currently have 2 possible field trip dates for attendees to choose from: December 5-7, 2022 OR February 20-22, 2023. Attendees can indicate their preferred date when registering.
